When it comes to the accolade of greatest air-cooled 911 road car, there are several worthy candidates, one of which is the 964-based Turbo S Lightweight produced in very limited numbers between 1992 and ‘93.
By combining the best attributes from the driver focused Carrera RS with a hot version of Porsche’s 3.3-litre turbocharged engine and a host of unique cosmetic details, Porsche created a hardcore limited run special with drop dead gorgeous looks and a formidable turn of speed.
Although 80 copies of the Turbo S Lightweight had been slated for production at the model’s 1992 Geneva Motor Show launch, Porsche’s new Exclusive department (formerly the Special Wish division) eventually turned out 86 units, one of which will be going under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s Arizona Biltmore sale in Phoenix on January 23rd.
Commissioned by a long-standing Porsche VIP, chassis WP0ZZZ96ZPS479011 was ordered in the unique combination of Midnight Blue Metallic with Amethyst Metallic wheel centres, Gold brake calipers and Bordeaux leather upholstery with matching carpet.
In addition to this fabulous colour scheme, the first owner also specified Porsche’s optional Matter rollcage and sport steering wheel which, like practically every interior surface, he requested the Exclusive department cover in leather.
Following completion on July 16th 1992, chassis ‘479011’ joined a collection that included a small series of 964s, all of which emerged from the Exclusive department with Amethyst wheel centres and extravagantly trimmed leather interiors.
Upon sale to its second owner in 2009, this one-of-one Turbo S Lightweight departed for the United States at which point the odometer showed just 95km. Since 2018, the car has formed part of the Todd Blue Lapis Collection and the mileage has risen to 633km.
As you would expect, chassis ‘579011’ is described as remaining in impeccable condition throughout. It is accompanied by the original book pack, tool kit, first aid kit, service records, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and even a set of original tyres.
