One to Buy: 20,000km Guards Red 1983 Porsche 911 3.3 Turbo Flachbau Series 1 (930)

If you were a sufficiently wealthy and well-connected Porsche customer back in the early 1980s, you might just have been offered something a little secretive. Something no regular Joe walking into the local main agent would ever even know about.

That car was the Porsche 935-inspired first generation 911 3.3 Turbo Flachbau assembled in tiny numbers (and at vast expense) by Porsche’s newly established Sonderwunsch department.

Having quietly opened in late 1980, the Sonderwunsch department went on to transform 59 copies of the 911 Turbo (plus the odd normally aspirated SC or Carrera) with striking new Flachbau bodywork. For a substantial fee, customers got a car with smooth front fenders and a completely redesigned single-piece front apron where the quad headlights now resided.

A variety of other bespoke body, interior and mechanical upgrades could be commissioned; if a customer wanted the full range of enhancements on offer, the list price of a standard 930 could more than double.

Heading to auction on January 14th at Mecum’s Kissimmee sale in Florida is one of those rarely seen Flachbau Series 1 Turbos: chassis WP0ZZZ93ZDS000677.

A 1983 model year Rest of World version originally delivered that year to Switzerland, ‘chassis ‘0677’ was ordered in Guards Red with special order Red leather upholstery extended to the upper dash, knee roll, door caps and steering wheel rim. Other extras fitted included contrast White piping, air-conditioning and an electric sunroof.

Remarkably, at the time of cataloguing, chassis ‘0677’ was showing a little over 20,000km from new. The matching numbers car is accompanied by its original book pack and two Porsche Authenticity Certificates plus a letter from Porsche North America detailing its credentials.
