One to Buy: 26,000km 1 of 10 1989 Porsche 911 3.3 Turbo S Sonauto (930)

Which 930 is most collectable, significant or desirable remains open to debate. By contrast, when it comes to the ultimate 930-based driving experience, the one-year-only five-speed model produced for the car’s final twelve months is king.

Whereas every other 930 had used a four-speed Porsche gearbox, the 1989 model year 911 Turbo got a Getrag unit with extra cog. While it may seem strange Porsche would have decided to make such a significant upgrade to the 930 so late in the day, future 911 Turbos based on the 964 platform also used iterations of the new Getrag ‘box.

To mark the 930-based 911 Turbo’s last year in production, a pair of special equipment variants were produced in very small numbers.

In the UK, Porsche Great Britain commissioned 50 Coupes with the 330bhp Turbo S package, vented rear fenders, deep side skirts, tinted glass, coloured wheel centres with coloured Porsche centre caps, a three-spoke steering wheel with gold Porsche crest, a matching gold crest on the leather gear knob and gold numbered plaque on centre console.

In France, ten Coupes were commissioned by Porsche’s distributor, Sonauto. These cars (most of which were bought up by German customers) also came with the 330bhp Turbo S package plus unique, slightly wider rear fenders, a Porsche Exclusive centre console with numbered plaque and Sports seats trimmed in the 959-style Gradient pattern. Only one colour scheme was offered: Black with matching upholstery and Black/Grey seats.

Currently up for sale at Shinoda Automobile in Tokyo is one of those Sonauto Turbo S specials. Finished as per the rest of the ten-car run in Paint to Sample two-layer Schwartz, the cars is showing a little over 26,000km.
