VIN: the Georg Loos Porsche 934 chassis 9306700159
/HISTORY OF CHASSIS 9306700159
Chassis 9306700159 was one of two 934s supplied to Cologne-based property magnate and team owner, Georg Loos.
Since starting to race seriously in 1968, Loos had campaigned an array of Porsche prototype and GT cars in addition to the odd Ferrari and McLaren. Along with its red sister car (chassis 9306700175), the white and blue-striped chassis ‘0159’ replaced Loos’ normally aspirated 911 3.0 RSRs that his outfit had campaigned so effectively throughout 1974 and ‘75.
The 1976 season saw chassis ‘0159’ appear extensively in World Sportscar Championship, European GT Championship and Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft events. The car, which normally appeared under a Tebernum Racing Team entry, was mostly piloted by ex-F1 driver, Tim Schenken, but Loos also employed pros like Clemens Schickentanz, Herbert Muller, Toine Hezemans and Klaus Ludwig to occasionally take the wheel.
Chassis ‘0159’ debuted alongside Loos’ red sister car at the 1976 World Championship season-opener, the Mugello 6 Hours, where Hezemans and Schickentanz qualified second quickest in the Group 4 class (seventh overall). Unfortunately, despite a strong showing, they dropped out just after one third distance with turbo trouble. The 934’s only other showing at World Championship level also proved a disappointment when Schickentanz and Muller were caught up in an opening lap accident at the Nurburgring 1000km.
By contrast, the European GT Championship was a happier hunting ground for ‘0159’ with its best result having been a second place finish for Schenken / Ludwig / Hezemans at the Monza 6 Hours. The European series also saw Schenken bag fourth at Imola and seventh at the Nurburgring.
The high profile DRM saw Schenken drive chassis ‘0159’ to a brace of late season wins. In addition to victories at Hockenheim and the Nurburgring, the Aussie also finished second at Diepholz.
As for non-championship contests, Schickentanz won driving ‘0159’ at Sylt and collected a third place finish at Zolder.
The 1977 season saw Georg Loos move up to the Group 5 category with a pair of Porsche’s newly introduced customer 935s. Accordingly, both ‘0159’ and ‘0175’ were sold off, the former going to Dutch privateer, Henri van Oorschot.
With the car now prepared by Scorpio Racing, van Oorschot contested over a dozen events in the Netherlands and Belgium, collecting nine outright wins.
Late in ‘77, van Oorschot sold ‘0159’ to fellow Dutchman, Antony-Josef 'Toon' Suykerbuyk, who had Scorpio Racing uprate it to partial 935 trim. Suykerbuyk went on to race the car in Dutch and Belgian events until the late summer of 1978, after which its period career came to a close. During 1980 the car was sold to a collector who retained it for the next two decades. More recently it has been restored to 1976 trim.
