VIN: the Max Moritz Porsche 934 chassis 9306700168

HISTORY OF CHASSIS 9306700168

Chassis 9306700168 was sold new to Autohaus Max Moritz GmbH in Reutlingen.

Having started his career as an independent mechanic, Max Moritz opened a Volkswagen and Porsche dealership in 1950. 1970 saw an Audi franchise added to the portfolio, by which time the Moritz chain had several locations across Germany.

The brand new 934 served as the Max Moritz Team car for 1976. In addition, the factory-supported operation also campaigned a second 934 (chassis ‘0167’) on behalf of privateer, Reinhold Stenzel. Both cars appeared in orange Jagermeister livery – Max Moritz had secured backing from the famous liqueur brand after he sold a 914/6 to Eckard Schimpf (Jagermeister’s marketing manager) a few years prior.

For 1976, Helmut Kelleners was employed to drive ‘0168’ in every one of its 17 competitive outings.

The German contested five of the seven European GT Championship races held in 1976, recording best finishes of third overall at the Norisring and Imola. For the Monza 6 Hour race, Kelleners was joined by Stenzel and Derek Bell where ‘0168’ took another third place finish. Kelleners ultimately accrued sufficient points to claim second in the Drivers’ standings behind fellow 934 pilot, Toine Hezemans, in the Georg Loos 934.

Kelleners was also co-driven by Bell and Stenzel for ‘0168’s only World Championship outing of the year: the Nurburgring 1000km. On this occasion, the Jagermeister 934 came home third overall to win the Group 4 category.

In the 1976 Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM), Kelleners was entered for eight of the ten rounds. In this, Germany’s premier domestic series, ‘0168’ got off to a great start, winning the season opening Nurburgring Eifelrennen. Kelleners also finished second at the Nurburgring Formula 1 Grand Prix Support Race, third at the Hockenheim Rheinpokal, fourth at the Nurburgring Super Sprint, fifth at Diepholz and seventh at the Hockenheim Preis von Baden-Wurttemberg. Unfortunately, a DNS following a practice crash at Mainz-Finthen and a DNF owing to turbo failure at the Hockenheim Preis de Nationen meant Kelleners only ended seventh in the final standings.

For 1977, Porsche began to offer the 935 to customers and Max Moritz purchased chassis 9307700905 to spearhead that year’s campaign. As for 934 chassis ‘0168’, it was uprated to 934/5 trim and appeared in white, blue and red Valvoline colours. Running in the DRM’s premier Division 1 class alongside fully fledged Group 5 cars like the 935, Edgar Doren contested all ten rounds in ‘0168’ and was a frequent top six finisher, his best results having been fourth places at Kassel-Calden and Zolder.

Outside of the DRM, chassis ‘0168’ most notably appeared in a couple of World Championship events during 1977 and finished well on both occasions. At the Nurburgring 1000km, Doren was joined by Edgar Barth where the Valvoline 934/5 placed 13th overall and sixth in class. At the Hockenheim 6 Hours, Doren, Gerhard Holup and Eckhard Schimpf placed seventh overall (seventh in class).

For the 1978 season, chassis ‘0168’ was converted back to 934 specification. That year it appeared in the white and turquoise colours of Weralit and, later on, orange Jagermister trim. Edgar Doren and Gerhard Holup teamed up for six World Championship contests, their highlights having been second in class finishes at the Mugello and Misano 6 Hour races. Chassis ‘0168’ also ran at the non-championship Le Mans 24 Hours but failed to finish owing to gearbox failure. In four DRM entries (where over 2-litre cars were all classified in Division 1), Doren managed top eight finished every time with his best placing having been sixth overall at the Norisring.

For the 1979 DRM season, Group 2 and 4 cars ran in a separate class from the Group 5 machinery. Edgar Doren contested all eleven rounds of that year’s series. Thanks to four class wins, a trio of second place finishes and a year of no DNFs, Doren was crowned winner of the Rennsport Trophy given to the best driver in a Group 2 or 4 car.

Chassis ‘0168’ was subsequently retired from frontline duty.
