One to Buy: 29,000km Polar Silver / Magenta 1992 Porsche 928 GTS

Despite the 928’s waning popularity and generally poor trading conditions, Porsche made some substantial changes to what would be the final iteration of its flagship Grand Tourer.

Most significantly, the 5-litre V8 from the outgoing S4 was replaced with a long stroke 5.4-litre unit that yielded substantial output gains. Elsewhere, the suspension and power steering systems were re-tuned, the front brakes were uprated, rear track was widened and bigger wheels were shod with latest generation tyres. Externally, flared fenders, aerodynamically formed mirrors and a tweaked tail fascia helped modernise the appearance.

Despite arguably still having been the best car in its class, the 928 GTS proved difficult to sell and, over the course of four years in production, less than 3000 were built. For comparison, at the peak of its popularity (the 1979 model year), just under 5500 928s were sold in a twelve month period.

Ironically, that combination of rarity and technical superiority has meant the 928 GTS is now the most widely sought incarnation of the 928. As most were originally pressed into daily driver duty and racked up intergalactic mileage though, finding a collector-grade example can be difficult.

For those wanting a low mileage 928 GTS in an unusual colour combination and super unrestored condition, just such a machine will be going under the hammer at Bingo Sports’ BH Auction event in Tokyo Bay on October 31st.

A first year GTS delivered in 1992 through Mitsuwa Motors, chassis WP0ZZZ92ZNS800543 was configured in optional Polar Silver Metallic with rarely seen Magenta upholstery. Other equipment included an automatic transmission, electric sunroof and the fender extensions commonly found on Japanese market 928s from the GTS era.

Said to be in highly original condition and showing a little over 29,500km, chassis ‘800543’ is accompanied by its original book pack, extensive service records and a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate that confirms the matching numbers status of its chassis, engine and transmission.
