One to Buy: 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa 'Rijkspolitie'
/ Ben Tyer
Between the 1950s and 1990s, members of the Korps Rijkspolitie, the Dutch National Police responsible for the nation's highways, were issued a variety of open top Porsche patrol cars; 356 Cabriolets, 914s and 911 Targas all served as a high performance, high profile deterrent to speeding motorists.
Open top body styles were chosen as Rijkspolitie officers were on occasion expected to stand up within the car to direct traffic.
Between August 13th and 14th, one of these rarely seen Dutch National Police Porsches will be going under the hammer during Broad Arrow Auctions’ event taking place at The Quail in Carmel, California.
Chassis WP0ZZZ91ZKS140989, also known as number 25, is a C20 Dutch-market Carrera Targa from 1989 that was optioned in Grand Prix White with Black upholstery and a rear windscreen wiper.
Upon delivery, the Dutch authorities added an array of special equipment that included a Targa bar-mounted blue rotating light, rear-facing 'POLITIE' illuminated sign, an engine cover-mounted loudspeaker, dual rear Hella lights, front apron-mounted Bosch horns and the spectacular orange Rijkspolitie highlights that came to characterise these cars.
Inside, a plywood shelf behind the front seats housed helmets, boots, lighting, radios, tools and a fire extinguisher. The dash got an audio system delete panel and additional switchgear plus a Teletron radio unit mounted just below the ashtray.
Because the Rijkspolitie was disbanded in 1994, 911 Targa number 25 saw a short stint of five years in service. Today the car shows a little under 157,000km. It was exported to the United States in 2024 and has been the recipient of an engine rebuild within the last 4000km.
