One to Buy: ex-Ron Dennis 2600 mile 1986 Porsche 911 3.3 Turbo Flachbau (930)

Two of the most famous Flachbau 930s were commissioned by key members from the McLaren F1 team that ran Porsche’s TAG-branded engines with such great success between mid 1983 and 1987. The first went to TAG CEO, Mansour Ojjeh who, having funded the Porsche F1 engine programme in exchange for 60% of McLaren, took delivery of a wild 935-style machine in 1983.

The second was acquired by McLaren boss Ron Dennis during 1986 after his team had recorded back-to-back Formula 1 Driver and Constructor titles in the two seasons prior.

When Ron Dennis received his Guards Red 930 in May 1986, the Flachbau conversion was still quietly reserved for Porsche’s VIP clients through the Sonderwunsch department. For the 1987 model year, production of which began in September 1986, the Flachbau became an officially recognised option available through any Porsche agent.

In line with its Sonderwunsch or Special Wish status, Dennis commissioned his Flachbau with a range of bespoke modifications. These included a high end audio system with a Blaupunkt Bremen head unit and uprated speakers, the rears of which were mounted in a custom parcel shelf assembly. Other rarely seen features were an LED boost gauge off to the right-hand side of the instrument binnacle and a mahogany veneered central control panel that housed a clock, voltmeter and ambient temperature gauge.

More common Sonderwunsch details like under-dash storage trays, a three-spoke Turbo steering wheel and 330bhp Turbo S engine were also fitted along with regular options such as an electric sunroof and air-conditioning.

Today, the uniquely configured ex-Ron Dennis is residing at the Roden Jones showroom in West Lothian, Scotland. A hugely significant Sonderwunsch-era Porsche, it has covered a remarkable 2600 miles from new and is being offered in superb unrestored condition throughout.
