One to Buy: ex-Kremer Racing / Claude Bourgoignie 1977 Porsche 935 Kremer K2
/ Ben Tyer
As Porsche had refused to sell customer copies of the brand new 935 for the 1976 season, the renowned Kremer Racing outfit in Cologne assembled their own 935-style Group 5 car using a factory-supplied bodyshell: the K1.
The following year, Porsche did begin to offer single turbo 935s at which point the Martini-backed works team moved up to a twin turbo version. Once again, Kremer assembled its own trick machine, the K2, from a bare bodyshell (007 00016). However, the team also took the opportunity to purchase one of the first factory-built customer 935s which it enhanced with an array of K2 upgrades: chassis 9307700903.
The 1977 season saw chassis 9307700903 campaigned extensively in the World Sportscar Championship, the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM) and at several major non-championship events such as the Le Mans 24 Hours and Norisring Trophy.
Following a third place finish on debut at the Daytona 24 Hours when it was driven by Bob Wollek, Reinhold Joest and Albrecht Krebs, the car went on to bag second at the Silverstone 6 Hours (Wollek / Fitzpatrick). Other impressive results during the 1977 World Sportscar Championship included a brace of fourth place finishes at the Brands Hatch 6 Hours (Wollek / Faure) and Hockenheim 6 Hours (Wollek / Haldi / Christmann).
Elsewhere, notable finishes in the 1977 DRM saw Wollek drive chassis 9306700903 to second Zolder and a third at the Nurburgring while Peter Gregg bagged the final podium spot at the Norisring and John Fitzpatrick placed fourth at Hockenheim.
Unfortunately, despite having qualified well as third fastest non-works 935 in 14th, Kremer’s mid-season trip to the Le Mans 24 Hours proved less successful as 9306700903 dropped out during the first hour with a blown turbo.
For the 1978 campaign, Kremer acquired a pair of brand new twin turbo 935s from Porsche and while 007 00016 was retained, chassis 9307700903 was sold to Belgian privateer, Claude Bourgoignie, who went on to take 20 outright victories en route to winning the 1978 and ‘79 Benelux GT Championships.
Today, the car is being offered by Duncan Hamilton ROFGO in Micheldever, Hampshire, with almost zero miles since a complete rebuild.
