One to Buy: Nismo enhanced Lightning Yellow 1999 Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R V spec
/ Ben Tyer
Because Nissan elected to follow a very different path with the R35 GT-R, making it an entirely new model that severed all links with the Skyline range, the prior R34 manufactured between 1999 and 2002 has come to be regarded as the last GT-R produced in the original mould.
To some extent, the logic behind Nissan’s decision made sense; having re-introduced the GT-R in 1989 with an R32-based Group A homologation special, around 44,000 units were sold compared to just 16,000 examples of the subsequent R33 variant. In turn, this figure dropped below 12,000 for the R34.
To address declining interest, a fresh approach was taken for the R35 which entered production in late 2007 and hung around for 18 years during which around 48,000 were completed.
Whether the R35 assumes the kind of icon status as its predecessors remains to be seen though.
These days, as a consequence of its rarity, last-of-line status and cultural impact, R34 GT-Rs command telephone number valuations, but few stand out because they were ordered in a really unusual specification.
However, just such a car is currently residing at the F1rst Motors showroom in Al Quoz, Dubai: an extremely rare Lightning Yellow example with just 48,000km on the odometer.
Originally bound for the Japanese Domestic Market, this sensational machine was configured by its first owner with the desirable V spec upgrade that included lower, firmer suspension and Nissan’s ATTESSA E-TS Pro four-wheel drive system which featured an electronic (as opposed to mechanical) limited-slip differential.
Also fitted as part of the V spec bundle was a deeper front spoiler, front brake air guides, a carbonfibre rear apron with integrated diffuser to smooth underbody airflow and intake / exhaust gas temperature read outs to the cockpit Multi Function Display.
Beyond its factory specification, the car (one of 44 such examples built) carries a number of desirable after market Nismo mechanical, cooling and aero upgrades to include a stunning set of LM GT4 wheels that contrast beautifully with the Lightning Yellow paint.
