One to Buy: Deep Marine Blue 1996 Nissan R33 Skyline GT-R Nismo 400R
Among the pantheon of great Japanese motor cars from the 20th century, the NISMO-developed 400R based on Nissan’s R33 Skyline GT-R is one of the most highly regarded.
Conceived as the ultimate Skyline of its day, the 400R came equipped with an enlarged 2.8-litre RB-X engine developed from the power unit campaigned in the GT1-class Skylines raced at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1996.
The 400R’s gearbox, suspension, brakes and wheels were also enhanced while externally an aggressive new aero kit was added and the cockpit was upgraded to incorporate an array of special equipment to include figure-hugging bucket seats.
With a 186mph top speed and 0-62mph time of 4 seconds dead, the 400R was easily the fastest Skyline ever offered to the public.
NISMO originally planned to build a run of 100 400Rs, but despite a mouth-watering specification and Le Mans pedigree, only 44 were ultimately completed.
As a consequence, these exceptionally rare machines today rank among the most sought after vehicles to have emerged from the Far East.
Opportunities to buy a 400R have become increasingly infrequent over the last few years and, as interest in iconic Japanese classics has soared, so have values.
However, currently on offer at the I Automobile Group showroom in Kowloon, Hong Kong, is a fabulous example finished in arguably the most desired colour scheme for one of these cars: Deep Marine Blue with Silver graphics.
