One to Buy: Bayside Blue 2001 Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R V-spec II Nismo S-Tune
/ Ben Tyer
With only 14 units known to have been completed in period, Nismo’s S-Tune is one of the most rarely seen factory sanctioned iterations of the legendary Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R.
Conceived as the ultimate upgrade for road use, the S-Tune pack comprised a full complement of mechanical and cosmetic enhancements aimed at maximising the potential of the already formidable base car.
Nismo’s Spec 1 motor fitted to these vehicles was riddled with uprated parts; the turbos, camshafts, airbox, electronics, filters, head gasket, radiator cap, oil cooler and exhaust all came in for attention. Buyers could select a custom cam cover and collector tank in either Crystal Red or Black. Power was fed through a sports clutch kit.
The net result was a peak output of 400bhp at 6800rpm and 325lb-ft at 5600rpm. For comparison, Nissan officially quoted the bone stock R34 GT-R as producing 276bhp at 6800rpm and 289lb-ft at 4400rpm.
For the S-Tune chassis, Nismo added their G-Attack suspension kit with tailored shocks, springs and anti-roll bars. There were also special S-Tune brake pads, PTFE brakes hoses and Nismo’s 18 x 9.5-inch LM GT4 wheels which could be ordered in Gold, White, Silver or Bronze. These handsome single piece forged alloy rims were shod with Bridgestone Potenza RE-01 275/35 ZR 18 tyres.
Externally, Nismo focused on increased downforce, reduced drag and optimised cooling. Accordingly, the S-Tune came with a custom aero kit that comprised a special front bumper, side skirts and rear spoiler with exposed adjustable carbonfibre flap. Other cosmetic enhancements included an aluminium Nismo fuel filler cap and Nismo S-Tune branding.
Inside, Nismo fitted a 320kmh speedometer and 11,00rpm rev counter, an upgraded multi-function display unit, a titanium shift knob and Nismo-branded floormats.
With such a short production run, the opportunity to acquire an R34 Skyline GT-R in Nismo S-Tune trim are few and far between. However, currently residing at the HJA Imports showroom in Essex is probably one of the best to exist.
Completed in October 2001, this particular example was based on a V-spec II-equipped GT-R in spectacular Bayside Blue. It has covered just 13,800km in the hands of one careful owner and comes with a fully documented Nissan / Nismo service history complete with all the original handbooks and manuals.
