One to Buy: 20,000km 1999 Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R V-spec Tommykaira R-Z

Of the myriad aftermarket tuners that worked their magic on Nissan’s R34 Skyline GT-R, the creations that emerged from Tommykaira’s Kyoto HQ have come to be regarded among the most sought after.

As per the likes of Nissan’s in-house tuning and motorsport department, Nismo, Tommykaira distilled this latest iteration of the GT-R into a more focused driving machine by offering performance equipment that uprated every aspect of the flagship R34; from engine, transmission, brake, suspension and wheel upgrades to exterior and interior enhancements, the Minami-ku firm offered it all.

At the top of the pecking order was Tommkaira’s R-series which came in three versions: the base 365bhp R, the 420bhp R-S and the all bells and whistles 530bhp R-Z of which only a tiny number were produced. However, currently on offer at the Bingo Sports showroom is one of those rare as hen’s teeth range toppers: chassis 005125.

Starting with a V-spec GT-R, Tommykaira added custom aprons, fenders, side skirts and spoilers. Inside, the instrumentation, gear knob and seats (the latter of which came embroidered with the Tommykaira emblem) were also new.

In the engine bay, the RB26DETT motor was taken out by 100cc and fitted with a new crankshaft, turbos and intercooler. Elsewhere, Bilstein shock absorbers, 19-inch forged magnesium PRO R wheels, AP Racing six-piston calipers and new brake discs completed the specification.

Chassis 005125 is being offered direct from 15 year ownership and comes complete with its original book pack. Having covered a little over 20,000km from new, this may be the best example of a Tommykaira R-Z to exist.
