One to Buy: Non-sunroof Black on Yellow 1976 Porsche 911 3.0 Turbo (930)

To the surprise of the bean counters at Porsche, the original 911-based homologation special, the 1973 model year 2.7-litre Carrera RS, went on to become e a massive commercial hit. Originally, company management thought they would struggle to sell the 500 units required for Group 4 homologation but more than three times this figure were ultimately produced within a single year.

As a consequence of its brief production run, many customers were left disappointed that they couldn’t get their hands on a new 911 2.7 Carrera RS. However, when it came to that car’s effective replacement, Porsche elected to make the new machine, dubbed 930, a permanent fixture in the model line up.

Perhaps the 930’s most significant new feature was its forced induction Flat 6 engine which in racing trim proved almost infinitely tuneable. It enabled the 934 and 935 that were homologated into Group 4 and 5 to dominate their respective classes well into the 1980s.

The first generation 930, better known as the 911 Turbo, was produced for the 1975, ‘76 and ‘77 model years. It came with a 3-litre version of Porsche’s legendary Flat 6 engine while, from 1978, an enlarged 3.3-litre unit was brought in.

An exceptional example of one of these early cars, a 1976 model year 930, is currently on offer at the Early 911S showroom in Wuppertal, Germany, and is perhaps as close to a brand new 930 as one could hope to find.

Chassis 9306700088 is an Italian market non-sunroof matching numbers machine configured in the stunning colour scheme of Black with Yellow upholstery and several desirable options to include a limited-slip differential, Sports seats and a Gold Turbo-branded decal kit.

Having been the subject of a complete Early 911S restoration, it is offered with a two-year warranty.
