One to Buy: ex-Andre Lotterer 1 of 55 1993 Porsche 911 3.8 Carrera RS (964)

After a 17 year gap, Porsche revived the 911 Carrera RS with a 964-based machine launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991.

Created to pave the way for a racing version (and also an attempt to stimulate lacklustre sales), this latest Renn Sport 911 was true to the original RS concept of less weight, extra horsepower and more focused dynamics.

Given its hardcore nature, the 964-based 911 Carrera RS proved a surprise a commercial hit as well as a potent yet cost-effective entry for the burgeoning early 90s GT racing scene.

Nearly 2300 were built between 1991 and 1992, after which the original 3.6-litre version was replaced by an all bells-and-whistles 3.8-litre iteration of which just 55 were constructed between 1993 and ‘94.

With its heavily spoilered aero kit, bulging wheelarch flares and the most powerful normally aspirated Porsche Flat 6 yet seen, the 964 3.8 Carrera RS remains one of the most sought after 911s ever.

Currently being represented by RMD is a superb example of one of these exceedingly rare cars: chassis 497066.

Configured in Guards Red with tri-tone upholstery, this particular car was one of just two that originally headed to the Americas, in this case Venezuela for where it was dispatched in September 1993. It returned to Germany in 1996, since which time the car has gone through the hands of three more European owners, one of whom was Le Mans winner, Andre Lotterer.

Currently Belgian domiciled and showing just 53,000km from new, chassis 497066 is a spectacular example of its type.
