One to Buy: M490 de-spoilered 1987 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Turbo Equipment Cabriolet

Although Porsche’s Sonderwunsch department had quietly been supplying customers with the normally aspirated 911s in ‘Turbo Look’ trim since the early 1980s, it did not become an official factory option until the 1986 model year, production of which began in September 1985.

Designated option code M491, the expensive Turbo Equipment upgrade comprised the bodywork, spoilers, suspension, brakes and wheels from the turbocharged 930, but with normally aspirated 3.2-litre running gear.

While the overwhelming majority of customers that wanted a Turbo Equipment car ticked the M491 option, a tiny handful of buyers wanted a more discrete appearance for their 911, one that combined the widebody look without the massive front and rear spoilers. For that, option code M470 was the ticket.

Along with the base spec. 1984 model year non-sunroof 911 Coupe, here at Supercar Nostalgia the rarely seen M490-optioned Carreras rank among our favourite iterations of the 3.2-litre 911. This is especially true when a car is presented in the kind of specification like the one currently on offer with Springbok Sportwagen in Isernhagen, Germany: chassis WP0ZZZ91ZHS151116.

A home market 1987 model year example, chassis ‘151116’ was configured in the gorgeous colour scheme of Marine Blue Metallic with matching dark blue upholstery. Optional extras fitted included electric heated seats, an electric roof, air-conditioning and an alarm.

Delivered in June 1987 through Porsche Centre Raffay in Hamburg, the car comes with a fully documented service history and has covered a little over 134,000km
