One to Buy: 1 of 5 built 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV/J

Automobili Lamborghini’s back catalogue may be filled with critically acclaimed pieces that came to define their era, but there is one model that is more highly prized than any other: the almost impossibly scare Miura P400 SV/J.

Conceived as an ultra high end homage to the one-off Jota that served as an experimental testbed before its untimely demise on an Italian autostrada during the spring of 1971, the SV/J was created exclusively for the kind of Lamborghini VIP that thought nothing of paying 60% more than a standard Miura SV to get something a little more bespoke.

In addition to uprated suspension and a tuned engine, the SV/J featured modified bodywork that mimicked the legendary Jota. Unfortunately, the highly labour-intensive process of converting standard SV panels delivered from Bertone meant lead times were long and only a handful of examples were completed.

In total, just five Miuras were built to SV/J trim by Lamborghini, one of which is set to go under the hammer at RM Sothebys’ sale at the Arizona Biltmore on January 16th.

Chassis 4892 started life as a standard Miura SV dispatched on July 13th 1971 in Bianco with Bleu upholstery. It was delivered through Lamborghini’s distributor for Rome, SEA, to local resident Dr. Alcide.

In 1974, official correspondence from Lamborghini confirmed chassis 4892 as having been to converted to SV/J trim and refinished in Rosso. The car was then exported to Japan by Tomita Automobile of Tokyo where it resided for over 30 years.

In more recent times, chassis 4892 re-located to the US where in 2007 it was subject to a major restoration by Miura expert Gary Bobileff, at which point the colour was changed to the trademark SV/J colour of Rosso Granada Metallizzato.
