One to Buy: 1 of 1 ex-Mansour Ojjeh 1983 Porsche 935 Street
/ Ben Tyer
Established in late 1980, Porsche’s Sonderwunsch division was created to give its wealthiest clients an outlet for their highly personalised requirements.
Arguably the ultimate expression of just how far things could go emerged in July 1983 when Porsche unveiled this 911 Turbo-based car which will be going under the hammer at Bonhams’ Spa Classic sale on May 18th.
Famously, chassis WPOZZZ93ZDS000817 was built for McLaren co-owner Mansour Ojjeh and handed over to the Saudi-born Frenchman at Porsche’s Weissach test track.
Ojjeh was of course a key player in the development of Porsche’s all-conquering Formula 1 engine that went on to deliver back-to-back Driver and Constructor titles for McLaren in 1984 and ‘85. Having put up the $5m Porsche required to create a 1.5-litre turbocharged V6, the Ojjeh family firm, Techniques d’Avant Garde (better known as TAG), became co-owner of the British F1 team.
As part of the McLaren-Porsche-TAG deal, Mansour Ojjeh took delivery of what was described as a “935 for the street – but with all the luxuries”.
Built at more than three times the price of a standard 911 Turbo, this unique machine, variously dubbed the 935 Street and 935 TAG Turbo, was riddled with bespoke kit to include a tuned engine, uprated suspension, centre-lock wheels, 935-inspired bodywork and a luxuriously equipped cockpit.
Chassis ‘817’ heads to auction in highly original, unrestored condition with a little over 12,000 miles showing on the odometer.
