One to Buy: 10,000 mile PTS Minerva Blue Met. / Pearl White 1989 Porsche 911 3.3 Turbo (930)
/ Ben Tyer
Alongside first year of production 3-litre Turbos and the 930 Flachbau, the most widely desired forced induction G body 911 was the five-speed variant produced exclusively for the 1989 model year.
For reasons of mechanical longevity, Porsche had been reluctant to drop a five-speed version of the 915 gearbox into the 930, but two years after the Getrag-supplied G50 unit had been adopted for the normally aspirated Carrera, the 911 Turbo finally got a fifth forward cog.
With its shorter ratios and punchier power delivery, the five-speed 930 had a notably different character to the four-speed iterations that came before. Accordingly, premiums for these run out variants can be eye-wateringly substantial.
Only 857 examples of the Euro-spec. 911 Turbo Coupe were built for the 1989 model year and just 86 were right-hand drive cars delivered to the UK. Of these, very few were completed to a unique specification, but that’s precisely what Hexagon Classic in London currently have in their showroom.
In addition to having been commissioned in Paint to Sample Minerva Blue Metallic with spectacular Dark Blue-piped special order Pearl White leather, Hexagon’s car was optioned with a white wheel centres, a limited-slip differential, heated seats, an electric sunroof, a Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46 audio system and the rarely seen three-spoke steering wheel complete with gold Porsche crest.
Supplied new by Porsche main dealer Swinford Motors of Stourbridge in August 1989, this best of breed example has covered a little under 10,000 miles from new and is being offered fresh from a recent major service.
