Unlike Ferrari and Aston Martin which made big profits with the likes of their limited production 288 GTO and V8 Vantage Zagato, Porsche lost a huge sum of money developing the flagship 959 for a motor sport programme that never got off the ground as had originally been planned.

However, the Stuttgart firm did manage to benefit from the booming market for low volume specials during the latter part of the 1980s by introducing a couple of wild variations of the 930 and 911: the Flachbau and Speedster.

Produced for just a few short months in 1989, the 911 Speedster was a modern interpretation of the much-loved 356-based variant manufactured between 1954 and 1958.

Built on 3.2 Carrera running gear, the new Speedster was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1988 and most notably featured a cut-down and more steeply raked windscreen, a flimsy canvas hood for emergency use only, a large body coloured polyurethane ‘double bubble’ moulding behind the seats and single-piece side windows with manual winders.

Just over 2000 examples of the 911 3.2 Speedster were built by Porsche which provided the firm with a useful financial boost for a relatively modest outlay.

The overwhelming majority of these were finished in either red, white, black or silver with the rest primarily in dark metallics.

Currently on offer at the Early 911S showroom in Wuppertal though is an example that broke with convention and was ordered in the sensational colour scheme of Lime Yellow with Black upholstery.

Chassis WP0ZZZ91ZKS151913 was further optioned with a long list of additional extras to include the highly desirable limited-slip differential plus a short shift gear lever, heated Sports seats, velour carpet for the front storage compartment and the popular Turbo body.

Today presented in superb unrestored condition with a little over 58,000km on the clock, this almost certain ly one-of-one 1989 Speedster represents arguably the best specification we have ever seen for one of these cars.
