One to Buy: rare Dark Blue 2 owner 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Speedster
/ Ben Tyer
Porsche’s back catalogue is filled with significant models from the marque’s history, whether it be racing cars like the 917, 956 and 962 that brought such major success or production models like the 356 and myriad iterations of the long-running 911.
However, right up there with the most iconic creations to have emerged from Porsche’s Stuttgart factory was the 356 Speedster produced between 1954 and 1958.
Despite this legendary status, it took Porsche the best part of three decades to re-introduce a Speedster to their product line-up, but at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1988 a production version of the highly anticipated 911 3.2 Speedster finally broke cover.
In the midst of a red hot collector car market, buyers could not get enough of the first Porsche Speedster from the modern era and over 2000 were produced in a nine month production run between January and September of 1989.
Of these, few were as tastefully specified as the example currently on offer at the Mechatronik showroom in Pleidelsheim, Germany.
Configured in the handsome combination of Dark Blue with matching upholstery, this particular machine was also optioned with heated Sports seats, velour front luggage compartment carpet and the popular Turbo body configuration.
Delivered new in Germany and retained by the first owner until 2008 (during which time it was reputedly not registered), the car has since resided with just one custodian and has today covered a mere 14,800km from new.
