One to Buy: 70,000 mile non-sunroof 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GT

Despite its humble origins as an ultimately unwanted commission from Volkswagen, the 924 went on to spawn a Le Mans 24 Hours class winner and one of Porsche’s most exciting homologation specials.

That car, created to pave the way for a Group 4 competition machine, was the 924 Carrera GT.

Unveiled in prototype form at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1979, the Carrera GT was essentially a 924 Turbo enhanced with an array of special equipment to include uprated suspension, wider wheels and tyres, a comprehensively tuned engine plus beefed-up gearbox internals. The body received a more aggressive aero kit and dramatically flared fenders while, in the cockpit, Recaro sports seats trimmed in black fabric with red pinstripes were added.

To comply with Group 4 homologation requirements, Porsche built the 400 cars required plus an additional six prototypes. Of these, 75 were configured in right-hand drive, one of which is currently on offer at the Autofarm showroom in Wendlebury, Oxfordshire.

Configured in Guards Red and with the highly desirable limited-slip differential option, this particular car was significantly specified without a lift-out sunroof making it lighter and stiffer than it otherwise would have been. Another optional extra fitted from new was air-conditioning.

Currently showing a little under 70,000 miles, this lovely Carrera GT comes complete with its all-important original service book as part of an impressive history that includes MOT’s back to 1985!
