History of chassis 065

Chassis 065 was the 52nd of 64 McLaren F1 production cars built and one of ten completed in 1997.

Configured in the most popular F1 colour of Magnesium Silver (one of 18), the interior was upholstered in black leather with matching carpet, a red driver’s seat insert and dark grey alcantara.

McLaren retained chassis 065 until 2004 and, during its time with the Woking firm, the car spent most of its life on display at their Park Lane showroom in central London.

When McLaren decided to close the Park Lane facility, chassis 065 was sold to its first private owner and, following an overhaul back at the factory, the still delivery mileage vehicle departed for Asia.

It returned to the UK for an RM Sotheby’s auction in October 2008 where, now showing 437km, it sold for a new F1 record of £2.5m ($3.68m) against an estimate of £1.1m to £1.4m.

Chassis 065 then departed for a new life in the USA.
