Following a successful couple of seasons for the 12C GT3 racing car, McLaren decided to produce a limited batch of GT Sprint variants for those customers that wanted a more focused track-only machine similar to Porsche’s 911 GT3 Cup and Ferrari’s 458 Challenge.

The GT Sprint programme came to fruition following a meeting between McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh and Dragon Racing boss Leon Price at the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix in November 2012.

Based at the Dubai Autodrome, Dragon Racing was the UAE’s premier track day organiser and ultimately took delivery of several 12C GT Sprints to include the first example completed which is set to go under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s auction in Dubai on December 1st.

Compared to a standard 12C, the GT Sprint came with an uprated 616bhp engine with enhanced oil and cooling systems re-tuned stability control and brake steer systems, a lower ride height, solid suspension bushes, air jacks, competition-grade cast-iron brake discs and 19-inch centre-lock wheels.

Other upgrades included GT3-inspired aero and cooling for the bodywork, a stripped-out interior, racing seats and harnesses, a GT3 digital instrument display, a roll cage and carbon-spoked non-airbag steering wheel.

One of just 14 examples built, chassis ‘007’ is being offered direct from Dragon Racing who have owned it since delivery in 2013.
