One to Buy: Delivery Mileage ex-Mansour Ojjeh 2015 McLaren 650S Can-Am
/ Ben Tyer
Following on from a batch of special 650S Coupes built to commemorate McLaren’s victory at the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours, a run of 50 Spiders was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the maiden Can-Am Championship.
Open to Group 7 cars upon which few technical limits were imposed, the big money Canadian-American Challenge Cup attracted a glittering array of drivers to include many F1 stars. After Lola and John Surtees won the inaugural Team and Driver crowns in late 1966, McLaren took both titles for the next five years straight.
Produced by McLaren Special Operations, each 650S Can-Am Spider came with a long list of upgrades to include an MSO polished stainless steel exhaust with four circular exit pipes shrouded by a new exposed carbonfibre grille. Exposed carbonfibre was also used for the roof, tonneau, front lid, air brake, front splitter and adjoining intake blades, the Can-Am-branded door blades, rear diffuser, tail fascia inlay and cockpit sill panels.
Unique lightweight forged alloy Can-Am wheels featured gloss-black centres, a diamond cut rim and titanium bolts. Black-painted calipers were standard.
Inside, each 650S Can-Am Spyder came trimmed in leather upholstery with alcantara seat inlays and contrast stitching. Both the carbonfibre and extended carbonfibre interior upgrade, a 650S Can-Am-branded monocell and a dedication plaque on the driver’s door were also fitted.
While McLaren offered the 650S Can-Am Spider in three special colour schemes (Mars Red with Black leather upholstery and Stone Grey alcantara inlays, Papaya Spark with Black leather and Blue alcantara inlays and Onyx Black with Black leather and Red alcantara inlays), some customers opted for their own tailored configuration.
One such individual was the late McLaren shareholder, Mansour Ojjeh, who took delivery of this car which is being offered by Tom Hartley Jnr. Part of a 20-strong collection of McLarens being sold by Ojjeh’s estate, chassis 006260 was the last of the 50 Can-Am special editions build as evidenced by its commemorative plaque which reads:
“THE LAST McLAREN 650S CAN-AM
BUILT IN AUGUST 2015
EXCLUSIVE COMMISSION FOR
MANSOUR OJJEH”
Instead of selecting from the aforementioned colour palettes offered by McLaren for the 650S Can-Am, Ojjeh elected to go with his trademark Mansour Orange paint over Black leather / alcantara upholstery and contrast orange stitching. Further optioned with extensive exposed carbonfibre, the Bahrain-domiciled chassis 006260 has covered a delivery mileage of 22km from new.
