One to Buy: 1 of 1 1989 Geneva Motor Show Porsche 911 3.2 Speedster
/ Ben Tyer
The last hurrah for the legendary G body 911 prior to its replacement by the heavily revised 964 was a revival of arguably Porsche’s most iconic body style: the Speedster.
Not seen since 1958 when the 356 A was still in production, the Speedster had long since become one of Porsche’s most revered creations, however, no serious thought was given to a renaissance until the second half of the 1980s, by which time the market for collectable and low volume specials was red hot.
Porsche had already begun to capitalise with machinery like the 930 Flachbau which became an official factory option in late 1986 having been quietly offered through the Special Wish department for a few years prior, but the new 911 Speedster would take things to another level from a commercial perspective.
Currently on offer at the Early 911S showroom in Wuppertal, Germany, is one of the most extraordinary 911 Speedsters to have emerged during the model’s brief production run during 1989.
Commissioned by Porsche themselves to appear at the most important motor show of 1989, the Geneva Salon, chassis WP0ZZZ91ZKS152178 was ordered to an ultra specialised configuration that demonstrated just how far the company could go to create a one-off piece of machinery. Accordingly, chassis ‘152178’ was decked out with Pearlescent White paint and matching leather upholstery along with the rarely seen Spoiler pack. It was also built in the comparatively scarce narrow body style.
Having covered a mere 3333km from new, this almost certainly one-of-one 911 Speedster ranks among the most important in existence.
