History of chassis 1121002

Chassis 1121002 was the first Countach LP400 S produced. It was sold to Lamborghini’s best customer of the 1970s: Walter Wolf.

Wolf was an oil trading magnate and F1 team owner who had financed the development of a bespoilered widebody Countach Speciale between 1975 and 1976. Five of these Countach Speciales were produced of which Wolf purchased two (chassis 1120148 and 1120202).

Previously, Wolf had also received the first Countach LP400 delivered to a customer (chassis 1120006) and the last Miura SV (5092). Lamborghini reconstructed the SV for Wolf in 1975 and as per usual, added a couple of custom touches.

The Countach S was a productionised version of the Countach Speciale. Considering his largesse had arguably kept the company afloat during troubled times, it was deemed appropriate that Wolf should receive the first example.

Prior to handover, chassis 1121002 was displayed at the 1978 Geneva Motor Show (March 3rd to 12th). Its handsome Bleu Speciale paint was complemented with a Senape interior and gold wheels.

Like Wolf’s two Countach Speciales, this latest machine was fitted with a tuned 4.8-litre engine that Wolf switched from car-to-car.

After it had appeared at Geneva, chassis 1121002 returned to the factory for some final touches. Gold pinstripes were added to the paint, a rear wing was installed and Wolf Racing logos were applied to the tail fascia and headlight pods.

The completed car was handed over on April 10th 1978.

As had been the case with his previous two Countach, Wolf couldn’t resist sending his latest acquisition to Dallara Automobili in Parma where it was kitted out with a series of extra upgrades. These included Lockheed eight piston calipers, a Borg & Beck racing clutch, a quick steering rack, an F1 steering wheel and cockpit-adjustable brake balance control.

Further modifications were carried out in April 1982 when the car’s interior was reworked by the BB tuning company in Frankfurt. BB installed a DINFOS digital dash and several other advanced electronic systems.
