One to Buy: #20 of 20 1998 Lamborghini Diablo SV Monterey Edition
/ Ben Tyer
For the 1998 model year, Lamborghini introduced an updated version of the Diablo SV which ushered in several significant improvements.
Chief among these was a new variable valve timing system that enabled the engine to use different camshaft profiles at low and high revs to reduce emissions and increase power. Peak output went from 510bhp to 530bhp at an unchanged 7100rpm while the torque rating was now 446lb-ft at 5500rpm compared to 428lb-ft at 5900rpm previously. Importantly, the addition of variable valve timing enabled Lamborghini to sell the SV in the USA.
Other upgrades included latest generation ABS software, larger diameter front wheels, bigger brake discs with four-piston calipers all round and a four-spoke airbag steering wheel.
As well as offering the revamped SV in standard trim, Lamborghini elected to create a limited run US-only variant dubbed the Monterey Edition. Limited to just 20 units and loaded with special equipment, the last of these Monterey Editions to have been built will be going under the hammer at Broad Arrow Auctions’ Monterey Jet Center sale on August 13th.
Completed in June 1998, chassis ‘WLA12027’ was configured in Monterey Blue with silver SV graphics, Glacier leather, yellow piping and matching yellow stitching to include ‘SV Monterey Edition’ text embroidered onto the headrests.
Delivered to Prestige Imports in Miami Beach on August 3rd 1998, ‘WLA12027’ remained in Florida for the next two decades. In 2019, the car departed for Oregon and in July 2025 it was the subject of a $50,000 overhaul. ‘WLA12027’ is being offered with a fully documented service history and had covered 22,591km at the time of cataloguing.
