History of chassis SH-138.002

Chassis SH-138.002 was the second of two carbonfibre 962 tubs built by Team Schuppan and sold to British privateer, Tim Lee-Davey.

The tubs were produced by Schuppan under licence from Porsche.

Vern Schuppan drove for the works Porsche team every year between 1982 and 1988. He set up his own team in late 1987.

In 1989, Porsche supplied Schuppan with the technical drawings required to make copies of the 962 monocoque from composite materials (the standard factory tub was aluminium honeycomb).

Tim Lee-Davey rose to prominence in the junior ranks of British single seaters during the early 1980s. In 1984 he made the switch to sportscar racing with the works Tiga team.

In mid 1988, Team Davey was established. A brand new Porsche 962 was purchased (chassis 138) which, over the next 18 months, was predominantly campaigned in the World Sportscar Championship.

In September 1989, Davey took delivery of the first of his carbon 962 tubs which was numbered SH-138.001.

The second, SH-138.002, was delivered just in time for the 1990 Le Mans 24 Hours where it would race alongside SH-138.001.

The new car would be driven by Davey, Giovanni Lavaggi and Max Cohen-Olivar. For the race, Davey secured backing from Fuji Golf, Primagaz, Super Cad, VIP Vacation Club and Rizla.

SH-138.002 was built up in the paddock and did not appear at the circuit until Thursday. Unlike most teams, the perennially cash-strapped Davey did not have sufficient funds for the low drag tail favoured at Le Mans and raced both his cars with the high downforce rear end.

Despite technically not qualifying, the white and purple 962 was allowed to start in 49th and last position. It experienced several problems in the race to include losing a wheel, turbo trouble and leaking coolant but nevertheless went on to finish 19th overall.

Unfortunately, as a result of two drivers failing to pay for their 1990 season contracts, Team Davey folded in early 1991.

Chassis SH-138.002 never made another period appearance.
