History of chassis 9113600446

Chassis 9113600446 was one of the 17 Carrera RS built to right-hand drive M471 Sport trim.

Completed in January 1973, it left the factory in Grand Prix White with Blue decals and wheel inlays plus the optional limited-slip differential and heated rear window.

The car was delivered via AFN to 48 year old gentleman driver and renowned classic car dealer, Dan Margulies in London.

Margulies began his racing career during the early 1950s, initially with pre-World War 2 Bugatti’s, Talbot-Lagos and Delahayes before adding a new Lotus Mark VIII to his growing fleet for the 1954 season. A Jaguar C-type and Lotus Eleven followed soon afterwards, but by the late 1950s Margulies began to focus more on his business career as opposed to frontline competition although he still took in one or two predominantly European long distance events each year.

Between 1967 and ‘73, the only contemporary machinery Margulies raced were Porsche 911s. During those years he picked up a number of impressive finishes to include eleventh overall (second in class) at the ‘67 Targa Florio, 20th overall (fifth in class) on the 1969 Targa Florio and 19th overall (fourth in class) at the 1969 Mugello GP.

Margulies registered his new Porsche in February 1973 at which point it was issued the licence plate PGF 270L.

During the weeks that followed, Margulies filed an entry to race this latest 911 at the 1973 Targa Florio with Canadian industrialist and sportsman, Chuck Rathgeb.

Patron of the Toronto-based Comstock Racing Team, best known for its exploits with Ford models like the Shelby GT350 Mustang and GT40, Rathgeb was planning a trip to Europe during the summer of 1973 and agreed that he and Margulies would drive to Sicily for that year’s Targa Florio where they would race ‘0446’ under a Comstock entry alongside Andrew Hedges.

Margulies and Rathgeb departed in early May, but during the initial practice sessions for the Targa, Rathgeb quickly realised he would be unable to learn the daunting 72km Little Madonie circuit in time for race day.

Accordingly, Margulies and Hedges tackled the 792km event alone. They went on to finish an impressive 18th overall and fourth in the over two-litre GT class while fellow 911 drivers Herbert Muller and Gijs van Lennep took a historic outright victory in a Martini Racing RSR.

Dan Margulies retained chassis 9113600446 until early 1975, at which point is was sold via Porsche dealer Peter Lovett to Reggie McSpadden, a Director at the Issac Agnew Porsche agency in Ireland.

McSpadden rallied the RS on at least three occasions during 1975, after which it was sold to Esler Crawford and re-registered KOI 7.

Between 1976 and ‘78, Crawford sponsored Derek and Adrian Boyd who contested around a dozen rallies with the car. Its most notable finish during this period was victory on the 1977 Ulster Rally.

In 1995, Esler Crawford commissioned Francis Tuthill to carry out a comprehensive restoration of chassis 9113600446. Crawford subsequently retained it until 2007.
