Introduced two-and-a-half years after the S4 upon which it was based, Porsche’s 928 GT was the sportiest iteration of its V8-powered Grand Tourer yet seen.

In addition to a more powerful engine riddled with high performance parts, the manual transmission-only 928 GT featured shorter gear ratios, a limited-slip differential, stiffer suspension, sports seats, less weight and a set of forged alloy wheels.

Customers could enhance their 928 GT with all manner of optional extras, but while most elected for mainstream upgrades like improved audio systems, an electric sunroof, mobile telephone preparation, heated seats and air-conditioning, a handful of wealthy buyers sent their cars to Porsche’s Exclusive department for extra personalisation.

Just such an example is set to go under the hammer at the RM Sotheby’s auction in Paris on January 31st.

Uniquely, chassis ‘842374’ was commissioned with conventional as opposed to exposed pop-up headlights, flared arches, widened side skirts, custom exterior mirrors and spacers for the wheels. Other aspects of the specification included Slate Grey paint with matching upholstery, draped leather, heated seats, a Blaupunkt Berlin audio system and an electric sunroof.

Ordered direct from Porsche by the consigning vendor, chassis ‘842374’ has covered less than 70,000km from new and is presented in superb condition throughout.

Opportunities to buy a one owner 928 are few and far between. To find such a machine with a one-of-one Exclusive specification is almost unheard of.

The Porsche 928 GT offered here is a one-of-one showcase of the greatest 1980s car design. Ordered new by the consigning owner in 1989, the vendor customised the car with the Porsche Exclusive department.

The car’s factory codes (09981 and 09991) confirm the involvement of the Stuttgart marque’s “Sonderwunsch”, or special wishes team, while the “XA2” option signifies covered pop-up headlights—doing away with the circular and exposed rising lamps of the standard 928.

Other desirable features include “XB2” for wider body skirts and “XC1” for wider rear wheel arches, further to the fitment of deep-dish wheel spacers and aerodynamically improved wing mirrors. Importantly, the “639” option code outlines this car’s configuration as a 928 GT, benefiting from greater equipment and improved performance over the 928 S4.

Remarkably, the Porsche has remained with its first and only owner from new.

In the care of its long-term keeper, the 928 GT has been regularly maintained by Porsche service centres and specialist workshops, as verified by an accompanying service book and other invoices in its impressive history file.

At the time of cataloguing the odometer read 56,636 kilometres, though this is believed to be higher than stated due to the replacement of the original odometer unit in 2003, performed by Porsche Center Saarland. Documentation on file verifies that at the time of replacement, the original unit had recorded no more than 11,500 kilometres.

In August 2023, the 928 GT featured in a six-page Porsche Fahrer feature, outlining the unique and special qualities of this rare car.
