One to Buy: ex-Bob Akin 1984 Porsche 962

Although towards the end of its career the 956 / 962 was dethroned by newer machinery from Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, Porsche’s legendary Sports Prototype came to define the Group C era like no other.

Between 1982 and ‘87, these Porsches won an unprecedented six straight times at the Le Mans 24 Hours. There were also a quintet of Team’s / Manufacturer’s and Driver’s World Sportscar Championship titles from 1982 to 1986.

The 962 was conceived as a replacement for the 956 which the IMSA organisers had outlawed from their GTP championship on safety grounds. By extending the 956’s wheelbase to move the front wheels ahead of the pedal box, the resultant 962 was able to comply with regulations that stipulated the driver’s feet had to be behind the front axle.

Chassis 102 was one of five customer cars built for the Porsche 962’s inaugural season: 1984. It was supplied to New York industrialist, team owner and racing driver, Bob Akin.

Between 1980 and ‘84, Akin had campaigned Porsche 935s. He moved up to a 962 when chassis 102 arrived mid-way through the 1984 season. Like his previous cars, the 962 was painted red and appeared with title sponsorship from Akin’s long-term backer, Coca Cola, with whom he had been associated since 1980.

Chassis 102’s best performance came in the 1985 Daytona 24 Hours where Akin, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Paul Miller claimed fourth.

Today, this beautifully restored and exceptionally well-prepared 962 is on offer with Canepa in Scotts Valley, California.
