History of chassis 106

Chassis 106 was sold to British racing driver and team owner, Richard Lloyd.

Lloyd began competing in the late 1960s. After a series of Morgans, Triumphs and Lotuses, he moved up to Chevrons and Lolas during the early-to-mid 1970s.

For 1977, Lloyd migrated to the British Saloon Car Championship. He was backed by Volkswagen Great Britain and, over the next four seasons, his new team, GTi Engineering, successfully ran a series of Golf GTis.

In 1981, the operation expanded to international sports car racing with new backer, Canon.

A Porsche 924 Carrera GTR was acquired and several impressive results were achieved under the banner of Richard Lloyd Racing (RLR).

After a couple of seasons with the 924, RLR ordered a Group C 956 for 1983. Jan Lammers did most of the driving and was usually partnered by Jonathan Palmer. Thierry Boutsen, Derek Bell, Keke Rosberg, Tiff Needell and Henri Toivonen were also recruited for various events and Richard Lloyd himself drove a couple of races too.

Highlights from the 1983 season included third place finishes at the Silverstone, Nurburgring and Mugello 1000km races. Chassis 106 was a frequent top six finisher and achieved a 100% reliability record.

The white and red 956 was retained for the majority of 1984 and, on its last outing for RLR, took a famous win at the Brands Hatch 1000km World Sportscar Championship race.

After the win at Brands, the team switched to the first of several Nigel Stroud-designed 956/962 chassis they would go on to campaign over the next few seasons (chassis 106B).

In June 1985, chassis 106 was sold to Walter Brun. It joined two other 956s in the Brun Motorsport stable (111 and 116) and replaced the team’s 962 (107) that had just been wrecked at Le Mans.

However, 106 soon became Brun’s only car.

First, chassis 111 was sold to the Trust Racing Team in August as Trust’s car had been wrecked at the Fuji 500 mile race (118). Then Brun’s other 956, chassis 116, was destroyed on September 1st in Steffan Bellof’s fatal accident at the Spa 1000km.

Chassis 106 saw out the rest of the season for the team. It appeared in a multitude of liveries with the likes of Thierry Boutsen, Gerhard Berger, Jochen Mass and Hans-Joachim Stuck behind the wheel.

Best results were second place finishes at the Norisring Trophy and Nurburgring Interserie race.

For the 1986 season, Walter Brun purchased two new 962s (115 and 117) and had the 962 wrecked at Le Mans rebuilt around a new tub (107B).

Despite the arrival of a trio of fresh 962s, the old 956 had its busiest year yet. It appeared with no less than eleven drivers during the course of 1986 and contested 17 races in a variety of liveries.

Although it achieved no victories that year, chassis 106 generally proved extremely reliable. In the World Sportscar Championship it picked up second place finishes at Fuji and Jerez and took thirds at Monza and Brands Hatch. In total, it appeared on the podium nine times in 1986.

Strong results for Brun’s other cars meant the Swiss concern won the 1986 Teams Championship. They finished four points ahead of rival Porsche outfit, Joest Racing, and five ahead of the works Jaguar and Porsche teams.

The 956 was banned on safety grounds after 1986 at which point chassis 106 spent several years with Brun as a show car.

It was later purchased by Henry Pearman in the UK who subsequently had it restored to its original Canon livery.
