History of chassis 9113600727

Of the 49 RSRs built for customers in 1973, chassis 9113600727 was unique.

Destined for Peter Gregg’s Brumos team in Jacksonville, Florida, the car was assembled to largely the same specification as Porsche’s works RSRs campaigned in the 1973 World Sportscar Championship. A pair of these works R-numbered 911s had also been shipped out to the US for Peter Gregg (R4) and Al Holbert (R3).

As Porsche’s top representatives with the 911 in America, Gregg and Haywood stood a good chance of winning that year’s IMSA and Trans-Am championships. Given the US was Porsche’s most lucrative marketplace, the promotional benefits of securing both series were enormous.

Together with co-driver, Hurley Haywood, Peter Gregg had famously won the Daytona 24 Hours driving R4 in early February. After such a significant victory, the car was retired from active duty and Porsche sent Gregg a replica for use during the rest of 1973.

To give the Brumos driver every possible chance, his brand new machine came with myriad improvements over stock. These included a stiffer chassis, titanium suspension and, perhaps most importantly, a three-litre engine instead of the standard 2.8-litre power unit.

Delivered to New York on April 7th 1973, 0727 was trucked down to Florida and prepared for the opening Trans-Am round which took place at Road Atlanta just eight days later.

Gregg’s victory at Road Atlanta was the first of many that season and he finished the 1973 campaign as both IMSA and Trans-Am champion.

Afterwards, 0727 was stripped of its titanium suspension parts and sold to professional racing driver, Charlie Kemp.

Originally from Mississippi but resident in Atlanta, Kemp was already familiar with 911s. He had also raced Bobby Rinzler’s 917/10 in the 1973 Can-Am Championship.

Backed by Days Inns Hotels, Kemp’s best finish with the RSR in 1974 was ninth overall at the Mid-Ohio 5 Hours.

For 1975, Kemp ran the 911 under the Armorall Racing Team banner and was much more successful. That season, every race he finished he placed inside the top ten, most notably taking third overall at the Daytona 24 Hours.

The Porsche was then sold via broker George Valerio to Dan MacLaughlin of Southern California.

MacLaughlin retained 0727 until 1979 at which point it went into the hands of a long-term US owner who kept it until 2012.
