One to Buy: 52,000km Championship White 2002 Honda DC5 Integra Type R
Launched in September 1995, the DC2 Integra Type R was Honda’s first iteration of a mainstream R-badged model as the firm had previously only offered the flagship NSX with its now legendary high performance moniker.
Production of the DC2 Integra Type R continued until late 2000, by which time a little over 30,000 examples of the critically acclaimed machine had been supplied. Thankfully, having proven a commercial hit, a successor based on the new fourth generation Integra was a shoe-in.
The DC5 Integra Type R arrived at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2001 and employed the familiar mantra of less weight, extra power and a more driver-focused chassis. Compared to the outgoing model, this latest iteration most notably featured an engine that was around 200cc larger, a much-improved VTEC system and a six instead of five-speed gearbox.
Other new features of the DC5 Integra Type R were its slightly larger but much stiffer bodyshell along with a MacPherson strut as opposed to double wishbone front suspension layout which resulted in a more spacious cockpit.
Unfortunately, while the DC2 version had been sold in several European countries as well as the United States, the hot DC5 was only officially offered in Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Partly as a result of this, sales for the DC5 Type R were disappointing and failed to reach half that of its predecessor.
Today, finding a collector grade DC5 Integra Type R can be tough, however, currently on offer at the Contempt Concept showroom in Kowloon, Hong Kong, is just such a machine.
An early production Championship White example first registered in 2002, this super desirable base-spec. example has covered a little under 53,000km and looks to be in superb original condition throughout.
