Although Honda’s early automotive efforts largely focused on open top two-seat models,by the time the company made its breakthrough into the four-wheel market with the first generation Civic, it had completely shied away from the roadster market in favour of mass market eco boxes.

A little later, the odd hot hatch followed along with the flagship NSX, but it wasn’t until the dawn of the 21st century that Honda decided to revisit its roots and create a successor to the S500, S600 and S800 models that had done so much to help establish Honda as an auto maker during its formative years.

Appropriately, this latest iteration of the two-seat roadster theme, created to celebrate Honda’s 50th anniversary as a car builder, was dubbed S2000.

Set to go under the hammer at Broad Arrow Auctions’ Amelia Island sale in Florida between March 7th and 8th is an early S2000 showing a remarkable 42 miles from new.

Configured in Silverstone Metallic with Black upholstery, chassis JHMAP1149YT007691 was ordered by Hedy Cirrincione and delivered through Drum Honda in Watertown, New York, as a sister car to a New Formula Red S2000 that served as Miss Cirrincione’s daily driver.

Honda eventually completed a little over 110,000 examples of the S2000 during a ten year production run between 1999 and 2009, however, it is unlikely that a much better example of the breed exists anywhere in the world.

  • Engine No. F20C1-100768

Introduced at the dawn of the new millennium, the Honda S2000 represented a thoroughly modern interpretation of the classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Japanese roadster configuration.

Powering the two-seater was a revolutionary naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine, which achieved the highest specific output of any naturally-aspirated powerplant of its era, delivering an astonishing 123.5 horsepower per liter through a precision six-speed manual transmission.

The motorsport-derived chassis architecture, featuring double wishbone suspension, Torsen limited-slip differential, and a perfectly balanced 50:50 weight distribution, enabled this lightweight roadster to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in just 5.4 seconds, while its legendary 9,000 rpm redline provided an intoxicating wail that continues to captivate enthusiasts to this day.

This exceptionally preserved 2000 Honda S2000 stands as a testament to remarkable restraint, having covered just 42 miles from new under fastidious stewardship, each owner resisting the siren song of its legendary 9,000-rpm VTEC powerplant.

Originally acquired by Ms. Hedy Cirrincione through Drum Honda in Watertown, New York as a preservation piece to complement her daily-driven New Formula Red S2000, this museum-quality example now resides in a collection alongside two other S2000s, allowing its current custodian to maintain its time-capsule status while enjoying Honda's engineering masterpiece through his other examples.

Presenting in factory-fresh condition throughout, from its pristine Silverstone Metallic paintwork to its unblemished Black leather interior and spotless engine bay, this represents what must surely be the most original example of Honda's landmark millennium sports car extant.

This remarkable S2000 remained on its original Manufacturer's Statement of Origin until 2024, when it was first titled in preparation for sale. As befitting such an immaculately maintained example, it is accompanied by its original tool kit and factory-issued spare, presenting the successful bidder with an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire an S2000 exactly as it left the Takanezawa plant some twenty-five years ago.
