One to Buy: 1 owner 39,000km 1995 Honda NSX Type R

19 months after Porsche had successfully re-launched its hardcore driver-focused 911 Carrera RS, Honda followed suit with what has come to be regarded as Japan’s best sports car of the 20th century: the first generation NSX Type R.
Thanks to a state-of-art aluminium monocoque and rigorous attention to weight-saving that yielded almost perfect chassis dynamics, the base NSX had already shaken up the European establishment. Its superb normally aspirated V6, outstanding build quality and faultless ergonomics were also best in class.
The Type R arrived in late ‘92 having undergone a further weight reduction programme that saw much equipment junked to include the plush electric seats replaced with lightweight Recaro carbon-kevlar buckets. In the engine bay was a balanced and blueprinted V6 while a higher final drive ratio enabled quicker acceleration. Wheels were Type R-specific lightweight forged alloys and the suspension was stiffened up to optimise handling.

Although the standard NSX had proven a commercial success, Honda opted to make the Type a Japanese Domestic Market special, as a consequence of which production ran to just 483 units. Of these, undoubtedly one of the most interesting to have cropped up in recent times is chassis 1300262 – the 393rd of 483.
Set to go under the hammer at Broad Arrow Auctions’ Monterey sale scheduled for August 13th and 14th, Type R number 393 was ordered by its one and only owner in the ideal colour scheme of Berlina Black with red alcantara seats, Whilst in Japan it was serviced exclusively by the Honda Verno Aomori Central Sales Office. The car is being offered with under 39,000km on the odometer and the original book pack.
Deviations from standard trim include the interesting additions of a six-speed transmission and wheels imported from the subsequent face-lifted 3.2-litre NSX Type R and a titanium Fujitsubo titanium exhaust system.
