One to Buy: ex-Jay Kay 1985 BMW E12 M535i
/ Ben Tyer
When it came to an off-the-shelf mid-sized super saloon during the first half of the 1980s, nothing in the Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar or Alfa Romeo arsenal could touch the BMW Motorsport-enhanced M535i.
Chassis dynamics tuned by arguably the best engineers in Europe and a class-leading 215bhp 3.5-litre straight six engine were the order of the day. The gearbox was a close-ratio Getrag five-speed unit and power was fed through a limited-slip diff. The M353i had an edge in every department.
Top speed? 142mph. 0-62mph? 7 seconds.
Although this really was the ultimate four-door driving machine of its era, fate was not kind to the E12-M535i; at a time when they had very little value, many fell into a state of disrepair and were scrapped making well preserved survivors very scare and an absolute treat to see.
One car that most definitely falls into that category is the exceptional example currently on offer at the JZM Porsche showroom in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire.
First registered in the UK during April 1985, the Alpine White paint is complemented by an evocative BMW Motorsport decal kit. In recent times, the car has formed part of Jamiroquai front man Jay Kay’s collection.
