One to Buy: number 65 of 67 built 2013 BMW E90 M3 CRT
/ Ben Tyer
Perhaps counter-intuitively, the lightest body style from BMW’s V8-powered M3 line produced between 2007 and 2013 was the four-door E90 Sedan which tipped the scales at 50kg less than a two-door E90 Coupe.
With this in mind, when BMW Motorsport wanted to demonstrate its production capabilities with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) and offer its customers a full four seater with the lowest possible mass, it was an E90-based variant that got the nod.
The resultant M3 CRT was unveiled in production-ready trim at the BMW M night which took place at the Nurburgring 24 Hour race weekend in June 2011. Excitingly, it combined the chassis and drivetrain enhancements from the radical E92 M3 GTS Coupe with a variety of lightweight components unique to the CRT.
Unlike every other M3 from this era (which were all assembled at the regular BMW production line in Regensburg), both the GTS and CRT were produced at the BMW Motorsport facility in Garching.
In total, just 67 customer copies of the CRT were produced between August and October 2011, a fine low mileage example of which is currently on offer at The Octane Collection in Horsham, West Sussex.
Delivered by BMW Spaett GmbH in Germany during April 2013, CRT number 65 subsequently had its running-in service carried out in October that year at 2357 miles. The first owner then exported the car to the UK in 2018.
Since acquisition by the current custodian, number 65 (which is one of 62 left-hand drive CRTs built) has covered a little over 5000 miles more. Four services have been carried out in the UK, the most recent of which was completed by Vines BMW in Guildford on December 5th 2025 at 7822 miles.
According to The Octane Collection, number 65’s history file includes all the original factory-supplied literature, the complete book pack, MOT certificates, service invoices and even the original sales invoice.
