One to Buy: 1 owner Bianco Polo 1988 Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet
Although the addition of a Quattrovalvole engine in 1982 had endowed the Mondial with the kind of performance one would expect from a Ferrari, it was Pininfarina’s beautifully executed face-lift that arrived two-and-a-half years later which finally transformed the car into a seriously good looking machine.
This visual update coincided with the addition of an enlarged 3.2-litre engine that further enhanced performance. The uprated specification was bundled into a package re-branded as the Mondial 3.2. The revised car’s launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show coincided with the release of Ferrari’s 308 replacement, the similarly refreshed 328.
During a production ran that lasted from late 1985 to early 1989, Ferrari went on to complete 1797 examples of the Mondial 3.2, 987 of which were Coupes while the remaining 810 were Cabriolets.
After the explosion of wild colours chosen by customers in the 1960s and 70s, tastes then seemed to become increasingly homogenised during the 1980s when the overwhelming majority of Ferraris were configured in Rosso Corsa. However, currently on offer at the Movendi showroom in Dusseldorf is a Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet whose one and only custodian bucked the trend and opted for stunning Bianco Polo paint with Nero upholstery.
Originally delivered via the Auto Becker dealership in Dusseldorf, this totally original and unrestored 1988 Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet has clearly led a sheltered life having reputedly only been driven in fine weather. Accordingly, with just over 48,000km on the odometer, the car is offered in superb condition throughout and at €59,500 represents good value.
