2005 saw the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship re-branded Super GT as the organisers thought the new name better reflected the kind of vehicles that participated which, since 2003, had arguably been more akin to out-and-out prototypes than conventional GT machinery.

To give their ageing NSX every chance of victory against rivals Nissan and Toyota, Honda produced a tricked out homologation special for the 2005 season.

Based on the critically acclaimed NSX Type R, the Type R GT was equipped with a radical new body kit that comprised an extended carbonfibre nose panel with bigger intakes and a splitter-type front spoiler, bigger side-mounted intake scoops, deeper skirts, a sub-spoiler underneath the existing rear wing, an extended carbonfibre back bumper with much bigger venturis and an intake snorkel located through the rear window.

The rest of the specification was pure Type R.

Five NSX-R GTs were built in February 2005, but only one was sold to a customer.

That car, chassis NA2-2000043 (also known as GT001), is currently on offer with Bingo Sports in Tokyo.

Originally delivered to serial NSX owner, Yoshiaki Yoshida (the head of Japanese cosmetics and health food company DHC Corp.), GT001 has remained in Mr Yoshida’s possession since new, during which time it has covered less than 1000km.

Accordingly, the car is today offered in superb original condition and would make a unique centrepiece to any significant JDM or Honda collection.

VIN: NA2-2000043
Mileage: 950 kilometers

Honda produced the NSX-R GT for homologation purposes to improve the NSX race car’s competitiveness in the GT500 class of Super GT. The NSX-R GT is based on the NSX-R but features a 180mm longer and 90mm wider body with improved aerodynamics and more effective cooling. Perhaps most striking on this bodykit is the non-functional roof scoop mounted on the rear window.

The NSX-R GT is mechanically identical to the standard NSX-R, it’s powered by a 3.2-liter NA V6, producing around 290 horsepower. The car’s power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.

The NSX-R was exclusively sold to Japan and is itself a rare and desirable car. The NSX-R GT, however, is amongst the most elusive JDM cars, with only 5 produced and just this single example in private ownership. This car, with identification number RGT001, had been with the same owner since new and has less than 1,000km. The car now joins the BINGO Collection where it will continue to be a fixture in showrooms and car events.
