One to Buy: 1 of 1 ex-Bernd Kahnau 1988 Porsche 928 S4 Club Sport

During the 1988 model year, Porsche introduced new performance-oriented Club Sport variants of its 911 Carrera Coupe and 928 S4. In both cases, a little of the usual comfort and practicality were sacrificed to produce more driver-focused offerings.

Unfortunately, neither the 911 or 928 Club Sport proved especially popular and, in the S4’s case, only 27 units were built to Club Sport trim. Of these, just 19 were sold to customers. The other eight comprised four prototypes and another batch of four cars destined for Le Mans-winners Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Bob Wollek.

Currently, one of these incredibly rare machines, probably the most desirable production iteration of the 928, is on offer at the Thiesen Automobile showroom in Berlin.

Configured in Pine Green Metallic with Cashmere Beige upholstery (the only 928 Club Sport produced as such), chassis WPOZZZ92ZKS840540 was supplied to high ranking Porsche manager, Bernd Kahnau.

Having joined Porsche in 1979, Kahnau was heavily involved in various aspects of 928 production along with development of the 924 Carrera GTS and 911 3.2 Speedster. Later, Kahnau was project leader on the 928 GTS and the vitally important 993.

As for chassis ‘840540’, it came with all the usual Club Sport equipment to include a trick engine that featured a re-tuned intake system, uprated pistons, hot camshafts with greater valve lift, a re-mapped ECU (which took the redline from 6000rpm to 6775rpm) and a lightweight free-flow twin outlet exhaust.

In addition to a major weight reduction programme that cut 100kg, other aspects of the Club Sport specification included a five-speed manual short-shift gearbox, a limited-slip differential, a shorter final drive ratio, uprated Sport suspension, rolled fenders, Club Sport decals and new forged D90 wheels (spaced at the rear where the rims were an inch wider than normal).

Chassis ‘840540’ is being offered complete with Porsche Classic certification and a little over 123,000km on the odometer.
