One to Buy: ex-Maher Algadri 703 miles from new 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth Gr.N
/ Ben Tyer
Ford developed the Escort RS Cosworth in order to embark on their most serious rally programme since the ill-fated Group B RS200 of the mid 1980s.
2500 examples of the new car had to be produced in order to secure homologation for the 1993 season (half the previous 5000 unit requirement). The wild new Escort went on sale in May 1992 and was approved for competition use on January 1st 1993.
Developed by Ford’s SVO department in Borehamwood, this latest RS Cosworth was loosely based on the fifth generation Escort albeit substantially modified with a shortened floorpan, longitudinally-mounted engine and the four-wheel drive Cosworth-powered drivetrain from the Sapphire 4x4.
In addition to standard road-going Escort RS Cosworths, Ford also offered a factory Group N Motorsport version stripped to the bone with a stiffened shell, 300bhp engine and myriad other upgrades.
Set to go under the hammer at Iconic Auctioneers’ Silverstone Festival sale on August 25th is quite possibly the most original and unmolsted example of the Motorsport Group N Escort RS Cosworth in existence.
Originally prepared by Co-ordSport in Oldbury for Indonesian privateer Maher Algadri in 1993, chassis 93383 was further enhanced with an array of Ford Motorsport 909 parts to include a bladder fuel tank, a tuned engine, semi-straight cut gears and paddle clutch. Following preparation, the car was exported to Jakarta where it competed in just a couple of events before going into long-term storage.
Today this remarkable car has covered just 703 miles.
