One to Buy: ex-Jorg van Ommen 1981 Zakspeed Ford Escort Mk2 RS Gr.4

If you didn’t get enough from our recent article on the Capri Mk3 Werks Turbo, here’s a bit more Zakspeed Ford goodness: Jorg van Ommen’s iconic Denim-backed Group 4 Mk2 Escort from the 1981 and ‘82 seasons.

These legendary Zakspeed cars started as wide-arched Group 4 Escort bodyshells into which a 280bhp fuel-injected Cosworth BDA was dropped. Power was fed through a five-speed ZF gearbox and limited-slip differential. Massive centre lock BBS wheels were the order of the day along with major brake and suspension upgrades which resulted in a formidable Division 2 class challenger.

Chassis number ZAK-G4-001/81 was van Ommen’s primary race car for Zakspeed’s attack on that year’s Deutsche Automobil Rennsport Trophae collecting a trio of wins (Avus, Salzburgring and Wunstorf) and three second place finishes (Zolder, Diepholz and Nurburgring).

Today, the Swiss-domiciled car is being represented by RMD in Belgium. It is said to be in race-ready condition with in-date safety gear and FIA HTP certification that runs until the end of 2026. The Cosworth BDG engine currently fitted has just four hours run time since a rebuild by the renowned experts at Richardson Engineering.

Offered with two sets of spare BBS wheels and a well-documented history to include the original ONS wagenpass issued to Zakspeed in 1981.
