One to Buy: ex-Ford Family Midnight Blue Stripe Delete 2005 Ford GT
/ Ben Tyer
Unlike some of its other iconic performance models such as the Mustang and RS line of European specials which became more or less ever present, Ford didn’t get serious about building a replacement for its all-conquering 1960s GT until the turn of the millennium.
Admittedly, the financial cost to de-throne Ferrari from the pinnacle of sportscar racing had been vast, but Ford emerged with an incredible haul of silverware which most notably included four back-to-back wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours between 1966 and ‘69.
Finally, the long wait for a successor to the firm’s original masterpiece emerged at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2002 when a design study emerged to celebrate Ford’s 100th anniversary as an auto maker. Dubbed the GT40 Concept, the Camilo Pardo-styled machine caused a sensation and a production version was given the go ahead four months later.
Deliveries began in August 2004 for the 2005 model year and ran until September 2006 by which time 4038 examples had been completed. All were left-hand drive.
Buyers could personalise their second generation GT with a number of optional extras to include forged BBS wheels, painted racing stripes (in white, blue or black), painted calipers (red or gunmetal grey instead of the standard black) and a high end McIntosh audio system.
At no cost, customers could request the adhesive side stripes be deleted.
While many purchasers opted for a full complement of stripes, at Supercar Nostalgia we think the ultimate specification for one of these cars mixed full stripe delete with gorgeous Midnight Blue Metallic paint as depicted here.
Chassis 1FAFP90S75Y401457 was one of just 14 such cars produced during the 2005 model year and will be going under the hammer at Mecum’s Kissimmee sale on January 16th.
Originally ordered by a member of the Ford family (with whom it remained until 2025), chassis ‘401457’ was optioned with the desirable BBS forged lightweight aluminum wheels plus red brake calipers and the McIntosh stereo upgrade.
The car is also fitted with a Ford Racing exhaust system. It heads to auction with a little under 7000 miles on the odometer and is accompanied by the original book pack.
