One to Buy: 31,000 mile 1 of 4 in Radiant Red 1989 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth

Famously, in order to secure the fabled YBB motor for its Sierra RS Cosworth, Ford had to place an order for 15,000 engines which was three times the number needed to qualify for Group A homologation.

As a consequence, soon after production of the original massively spoilered three-door Hatchback was discontinued, Ford began to offer a more sensibly packaged model that was expected to have a much broader appeal.

That car was the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth which broke cover in November 1987 and was based around a more conventional-looking four-door Saloon bodyshell that, with its comparatively discrete cosmetic upgrades, was arguably the ultimate Q-car of its time.

A little over 10,000 examples of the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth were manufactured by the time production was discontinued in March 1990. Of these, only four were painted Radiant Red, probably the best of which is currently on offer at the JF Classic Cars showroom in Grimsby, Lincolnshire.

Supplied new to Brian Grantham by his local Hartwell Ford main dealer and first registered on October 9th 1989, the car was optioned with black leather upholstery and an alarm / immobiliser.

Remarkably, this superb example of the rear-drive Sapphire RS Cosworth is currently showing under 32,000 miles having clearly been cherished since new. It comes with a fully documented history to include the original bill of sale and must rank among the most significant examples of its type to exist.
