One to Buy: 14,000 mile Magenta Red Metallic 1991 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4
/ Ben Tyer
Ford wasn’t able to create the all-wheel drive Sierra Cosworth that it wanted, something in the Audi Quattro mould, until the MT75 gearbox came on stream in late 1988.
Having initially used the MT75 for its mainstream Sierra and Granada variants, in the backgound the finishing touches were being applied to an all-wheel drive Cossie: the Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4.
Unveiled in January 1990, Ford went on to build 12,250 copies of the Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4. Production was discontinued in December 1992, by which time the Escort RS Cosworth had already been on sale for six months.
In addition to optional extras like a Raven Black full leather interior, air-conditioning, an electric sunroof and onboard computer, customers could choose from either one of four standard colours or a special order shade.
We think that, with the 4x4 Cosworth’s clear front indicators and smoked tail light clusters (both of which were specific to this last-of-line all-wheel drive version), arguably the best colours were Ford’s dark metallics.
And currently on offer at the JF Classics showroom in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, is a very low mileage example of just such a car: one in rarely seen Magenta Red Metallic.
The car was ordered through Sandcliffe Ford Leicester by James Godfrey of Alfreton, Derbyshire. First registered on February 6th 1991, Mr Godfrey went on to retain the Sierra until November 2017 which, together with a mileage of less the 14,000, explains its remarkably well preserved condition.
