One to Buy: ex-Fritz d'Orey 1996 Ferrari 456 GT

Unveiled at the FF40 International Celebrations that took place in Brussels and at Spa Francorchamps during September 1992, the 456 GT replaced Ferrari’s 412 which had itself been an evolution of the 365 GT4 originally launched back in 1972.

With its beautiful Pininfarina styling, superb chassis dynamics, lusty new 442bhp V12 and outstanding build quality, the 456 GT re-defined what was possible from a front-engined 2+2. Despite depressed economic conditions, orders poured in from around the world.

An automatic transmission GTA variant was added to the range in 1996 and a further enhanced Modificato (the 456M) subsequently came on stream in 1998. However, for most enthusiasts, the original six-speed manual remains the most sought after iteration of this elegant model that kick-started Ferrari’s revival under the management of Luca di Montezemolo.

Currently on offer at the Real Art on Wheels showroom in Amsterdam is a fine 456 GT with particularly interesting provenance.

Configured in arguably the best colour scheme for one of these cars, Verde Inglese with Tan leather upholstery and matching carpet, chassis 104709 was originally supplied to privateer Brazilian racing driver, Fritz d’Orey, who most famously campaigned his own Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta during the late 1950s (chassis 0787 GT) along with a Maserati 250 F in three Formula 1 World Championship races (scoring a best finish of tenth in the ‘59 French Grand Prix at Reims).

One of just 55 left-hand drive examples to have departed the factory in Verde Inglese, chassis 104709 has today covered a little under 50,000km. It is being supplied with a complete set of Schedoni fitted luggage and is presented in outstanding condition throughout having recently undergone a major service.
