One to Buy: 2022 Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4

50 years after the original Countach LP500 prototype made its debut at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini unveiled a modern day tribute to celebrate arguably the marque’s most famous creation.

Unlike the original Countach which was manufactured over a 17 year period from 1973 to 1990, the new LPI 800-4 was produced for just a few months in 2022 following its public debut at The Quail Motorsports Gathering in Carmel Valley during August 2021.

112 units of the nuovo Countach were to be built – a figure that referenced the original car’s LP112 codename. Despite an eye-wateringly high price, the entire production run sold out within a week.

Mechanically the LPI 800-4 was powered by the same hybrid powertrain used by the Sian FKP 37: this was essentially an Aventador SVJ 6.5-litre V12 uprated with titanium intake valves, a re-mapped ECU, a free-flow exhaust and an electric motor integrated to the gearbox (which added 33bhp).

The 770bhp motor was hooked up to a seven-speed F1-style gearbox and dropped into a carbonfibre monocoque with aluminium subframes at either end.

The all-carbonfibre body designed by Mitja Borkert was a true 21st century interpretation of Marcello Gandini’s original. A new feature not seen back in the 1970s and 80s was a photocromatic roof that could be changed from solid to transparent at the push of a button.
