One to Buy: 1980 Koenig Specials Ferrari 512 BB
/ Ben Tyer
Of the myriad tuners that sprang up offering high end customisation of European supercars during the 1970s and 80s, arguably the most famous was Koenig Specials based in Frankfurt, Germany.
The company initially began to create a unique range of equipment for Ferrari’s Berlinetta Boxer, after which it expanded to cater for a variety of marques to include Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar and even Lamborghini.
What stood Koenig’s products out from most other firms of the era was its top grade engineering department that produced all manner of drivetrain and chassis upgrades. This enabled the company to develop some extraordinary vehicles that could, on occasion, pump out in excess of twice the horsepower rating of the donor car.
Currently on offer at the DD Classics showroom in Richmond, Surrey, is one of the most iconic vehicles to have emerged from the Koenig facility: a wide-bodied Ferrari 512 BB complete with 450bhp normally aspirated engine.
Presented in the typically 1980s colours scheme of Bianco with a Rosso interior and Nero seat inserts, this particular example was seemingly equipped with all of Koenig’s engine, transmission and chassis upgrades of the day plus the aforementioned body kit. Inside it features a period telephone, pager and Pioneer audio system to complete the specification.
Following a recent bare metal repaint, this German-delivered 58,000km from new Koenig BB is perhaps the ultimate representation of the fabled super tuner art.
